A few years ago, Fr. David Musso was serving as Campus Minister at the University of California at Santa Cruz when he was asked to take up that same role at the Marist School in Atlanta.

Because of his commitment to the Marists, he packed up, said goodbye to his friends in California, and moved 3,000 miles to Atlanta, Georgia.

“Campus Ministry at the Marist school in Atlanta is an infusion of the Marist ideal,” Fr. David believes. It is “the community for and from mission.” Campus ministry at this selective, highly competitive school requires a different approach. He offers about 15 retreats each year and helps students find a spiritual center in their busy lives focused on academic performance and extensive extracurricular activities.

The young people Fr. David works with are concerned about the moral character of the world. “They are seeking to be real, ethical, and caring people in a genuine way,” he says proudly.

Fr. David sees his role at Marist School as accompanying the students on their spiritual journey. He says the retreats, prayer groups, and reflection sessions he offers “provide room along the way to stop, to rest, to listen, to speak, to learn—to find and be with God.”

In the Schools

Marist School in Atlanta, Georgia is probably the most evident sign of the Marist’s century and a half long commitment to Catholic education in the United States, but Marists also serve on campuses, in hospital education programs, and with youth in a wide variety of ways.

From participation in a Suzuki-style violin program and orchestra in San Francisco to a summer school program for underprivileged youth in Atlanta, Marists express their founding call to help educate the youth of America.

They do it wherever they are and with the most important tool they have – compassion.
